WTF is Mushroom Coffee?

The myco:soul Guide to Mushroom Coffee

If you’re curious about this trend, we’re here to provide clear insights and cut through the marketing jargon. From health benefits to brewing tips, let’s get into it.

What is Mushroom Coffee?

Mushroom coffee is a blend of regular coffee with added mushroom extracts. It doesn’t taste like mushrooms, instead, it has a rich coffee flavor with subtle nutty, earthy undertones. The taste depends on:

  • The type of coffee used
  • The type of mushrooms added
  • The coffee-to-mushroom ratio

Several brands use powdered instant coffee mixed with powdered mushroom extracts.

Our myco coffee: is different, it's 91.7% ground coffee and 8.3% mushroom extract—a ratio we fine-tuned over months (and we mean months) of testing. The mushrooms used are functional varieties like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, and Cordyceps, known for their health benefits (which we’ll get into next).

Health Benefits of Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom coffee is believed to offer several potential health benefits:

1. Immune Support

Mushrooms like Cordyceps contain antioxidants and polyphenols that help support the immune system.

2. Stress Reduction

Adaptogenic mushrooms help balance cortisol levels, supporting the body’s response to stress.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Research shows that Cordyceps and its active compounds have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and anti-hyperglycemic properties (Tachon et al., 2013).

4. Cognitive Function & Brain Health

  • Lion’s Mane stimulates Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), supporting brain function, memory, and focus.
  • It may also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and help slow cognitive decline.
  • Studies suggest it can reverse age-related memory decline with consistent use and promotes neuro-healthy aging.

5. Enhanced Physical Performance & Energy

  • Cordyceps has also been studied for its role in ATP (cellular energy) production, with potential benefits for stamina and exercise performance.

6. Lower Caffeine, Fewer Jitters

Mushroom coffee has less caffeine than regular coffee, making it a good choice for those who are caffeine-sensitive or looking to reduce their intake without sacrificing energy levels.

Is Mushroom Coffee Worth Trying?

If you love coffee and want to try something new, with a lower-caffeine option, and a more sustained energy release profile and potential health perks, mushroom coffee is worth a shot. While research on mushroom coffee itself is still emerging, many people enjoy it for its earthy flavor, smoother energy boost, and added wellness benefits.

We provide all of the relevant research in the product pages of our website.

Caffeine Content: Is It Lower Than Regular Coffee?

Yes! Since mushrooms contains zero caffeine, blending it with coffee naturally reduces the overall caffeine content. Most instant mushroom coffee blends have about half the caffeine of regular coffee, but as you use a very small amount, ie a teaspoon in each cup, you get very little mushroom extracts or benefits. Our mushroom coffee serving size is 15g because we only use fresh, ground coffee (92%) and pure mushroom extracts (8%), so this means a serving is about 8% less caffeine than regular coffee.

Potential Side Effects & Safety

Mushroom coffee is generally safe for most people, but some may experience mild side effects, including:

  • Digestive Issues – Those with sensitivities or kidney problems should consult a doctor before consuming.
  • Oxalates – Some mushrooms contain oxalates, which may contribute to kidney stones if consumed in excess.

If you have underlying health conditions or are pregnant, it’s best to check with your doctor before switching to mushroom coffee.

✔️ High-quality, Organic coffee (freshly roasted and ground is best, skip the instant)
✔️ No maltodextrin or fillers
